Kohima, October 6 (MExN): The Malayali community in Kohima gathered to celebrate Onam at the Dr. Imkongliba Hall, Raj Bhavan, with Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan, as the Chief Guest. The Governor expressed his pleasure in joining the community for the festival, which, although traditionally celebrated two weeks earlier in Kerala, brought a sense of home and joy to those far from their native state.

Governor Ganesan spoke about the unifying nature of Onam, highlighting how the festival transcends religious, caste, and social barriers to celebrate harmony. "Though rooted in the Hindu mythology of King Mahabali and Vamana, Onam is celebrated by people of all backgrounds with enthusiasm," he said. "These gatherings not only celebrate cultural heritage but also strengthen social bonds."

Reflecting on his experiences in Kerala, the Governor noted the significance of Onam for the Malayali diaspora, who often return home to reconnect with family and community during the festival. He shared how Onam brings together people from all walks of life, regardless of wealth or status. “Both the rich and the poor partake in the same meal on banana leaves and wear traditional attire like mundu and setmundu,” he remarked.

The Governor encouraged participants to embrace the festival’s inclusivity and strive for a society that celebrates diversity, unity, and prosperity. The event featured various cultural performances from the Malayali community, showcasing the vibrant traditions of Kerala.
