Panchayats union decides against setting up ‘Election Camps’

Kohima, November 11 (MExN): The 8th Western Urban Panchayats Union, Kohima, which comprises of five urban Panchayats under 8th Western Angami Assembly Constituency, has resolved not to set up ‘Election Camps’ for any intending candidates under the jurisdiction of the five panchayats – New Market Area Panchayat, Midlane Area Panchayat, Daklane Area Panchayat, Officer’s Hill Area Panchayat, and Naga Hospital Area Panchayat.  

This decision was made on November 8 at the executive members’ meeting of the union honouring the resolution of NBCC Clean Election campaign and to reduce election expenditure for the candidates in the forthcoming Assembly Election.  

However, the house taking into consideration the smooth functioning of the political parties decided to allow temporary office for paper works with a condition that the offices must close by 7:00 pm. “The timing was enforced in order to avoid anti-social activities and for a peaceful environment within the Colony,” stated a press release from Zerüüzo Suohu, secretary and Khrielakuo Sekhose, convenor of the 8th Western Urban Panchayats Union.  

The meeting further resolved that only one office for one candidate under one Panchayat will be allowed and daily party feasting in the office will not be allowed for any political parties.  

A resolution was also made to organize a common platform for the intending candidates under 8th Western Angami Assembly Constituency, Urban Areas, Kohima in the forthcoming Assembly Election. It will likely be held in the month of February 2018 after finalization of the candidatures.  

The press release mentioned that the 8th Western Urban Panchayats Union, Kohima was formed at a meeting of the five Panchayats on October 30 at Hotel 2K, Officers’ Hill, Kohima. The meeting was attended by the Panchayat Chairpersons, Secretaries, Gaon Buras, Youth Presidents and other Executive Members. The members after a lengthy discussion and deliberation resolved to form the union with an intention that “the existence of the ‘union’ can bring unity among the Panchayats and see the developmental work and also to maintain peace in order to have a cordial relationship amongst the residents of the five Panchayats,” the release added.  

Among others, the following persons were unanimously chosen by the house to be office bearers for the tenure 2017 to 2022: Convenor – Khrielakuo Sekhose; Co-Convenor – Visa Meru; Secretary – Zerüüzo Suohu; Treasurer – Khuvishe (Atomu) Zimhomi. All the Panchayat Chairpersons were selected as Executive Members.
