Panel Lawyers reminded to render service to weaker sections of society

Refresher training for Panel Lawyers underway in Kohima

Kohima, November 15 (MExN): Justice LS Jamir, Judge, Gauhati High Court Kohima Bench today urged Panel Lawyers to focus on rendering service to the ordinary citizens as the legal services authority was constituted to provide free and competent legal service to the weaker sections of the society.   He was speaking at the three-day refresher training for Panel Lawyers organised by the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA), which began today at Directorate of State Institute of Rural Development, Kohima.   According to a press release from NSLSA, LS Jamir further asked the lawyers to dispose legal aid cases taken up by them at the earliest and to file quarterly reports to the state legal services authority with services rendered. Panel Lawyers, he stated, should be a guide to one or more Para Legal Volunteers as that will go a long way in reaching to the grassroots. He also urged them to inculcate the methods learnt from the training and implement in manner suitable to villages and towns.   Nino Iralu, Special Judge TDP Vigilance Commission and Member Secretary NSLSA in her keynote address said that lawyers are important pillars of legal services authority, PLVs and district magistrate and judges. She therefore said there is a need to come and learn from resource persons to render quality services.   Michael Zarin, State Program Officer, Social Welfare Department spoke on welfare schemes with special emphasis on PWDs, Juliana Medom, Assistant Coordinator, State Resource Centre for women spoke on plans, policies and programmes under SRCW, Dr. Khriezotuo Paphino, Deputy Director, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Nagaland spoke on National Health Programme/Services in place, T. Chubayanger, Project Officer Department of Labour Nagaland spoke on Construction Workers’ Welfare Schemes with special emphasis on the Society Act, Raitale Zeliang, Programme Manager, State Child Protection Society Nagaland spoke on Integrated Child Protection Scheme Mechanism and its functions and Limasenla Longkumer, Legal Aid Counsel-cum-Trainer NSLSA spoke on Right to Education.
