Kohima, September 18 (MExN): Deputy Commissioner Kohima B Henok Buchem on Friday urged freshers of Nagaland University to recognise and seize opportunities rather than wait for perfect circumstances.
Addressing the 33rd Freshers' Meet 2026 of the Nagaland University Students' Union, Kohima Campus, at AGOK Badze, Meriema, Buchem said the theme of the programme, "KAIROS – The Perfect Moment Begins Now", was a reminder to make the most of the right or decisive moments in life.
The programme welcomed the new batch of students and marked the beginning of their university journey.
Sharing experiences from his student days and subsequent journey into public service, Buchem highlighted the importance of perseverance, preparation, faith and the courage to overcome failure.
He recalled clearing the Nagaland Public Service Commission examination after an earlier unsuccessful attempt, describing the moment his name was announced among the selected candidates as deeply significant in his life.
Buchem encouraged the students to make the most of their university years through learning, participation and personal growth. He urged them to take part in debates, literary activities, competitions and other opportunities that could develop their communication and critical-thinking skills.
He also advised students to use technology and artificial intelligence responsibly and cautioned them against substance abuse, gambling, excessive social media use, misinformation and other distractions.
Emphasising that education carried a responsibility beyond obtaining a degree, Buchem called upon the students to uphold the reputation of Nagaland University through their character, conduct and achievements and contribute meaningfully to society and the state.
He also urged senior students and the Students' Union to extend kindness and guidance to freshers and foster a supportive university community.
The programme included an invocation by Meshao Shiu, welcome address by NUSU-KC President Putusunep Jamir, a presentation by Information and Publicity Secretary Loviboli Aye, a song by the Department of English and a speech on behalf of the freshers by Kivini S Zhimomi of the Department of Psychology.
Dr Pucho Kiso offered the prayer of blessings, while General Secretary Jomithung Ngullie delivered the vote of thanks. Minuka Pradhan delivered the benediction, according to the District Public Relations Office, Kohima.
