Dimapur, September 18 (MExN): The East Dimapur Town Council (EDTC) has cautioned livestock and animal owners against letting cattle and other animals stray onto National Highways, State Highways, and major roads.
In a statement, the council noted that it could lead to accidents, traffic obstruction, loss of life, and property damage. The directive has been issued in compliance with directions from the Government of Nagaland and the Supreme Court of India regarding the regulation and removal of stray animals on highways.
As per the notice, no individual is permitted to allow cattle, livestock, or other animals under their ownership or custody to stray, graze, remain unattended, or obstruct carriageways. Persons moving animals along or across roads must keep them properly controlled, supervised, and make use of designated crossing routes wherever practicable.
The directive stated that animal owners will be held strictly responsible for any hazards or obstructions caused to road users.
The EDTC, working in coordination with concerned departments and authorities, will undertake measures to identify and remove stray animals from vulnerable and high-risk road stretches. Furthermore, the public has been urged to immediately report stray animals or related road hazards to authorities for prompt action.
The council has appealed to livestock owners and the general public to extend full cooperation and ensure strict compliance in the interest of public safety and smooth traffic movement. Violators will face action under the applicable rules and provisions of the law.
