Nagaland has improved its performance in the Government of India’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for 2024-25, moving up from the Akanshi-2 category in 2023-24 to Akanshi-1 in the latest assessment of school education across States and Union Territories.

According to the Ministry of Education’s PGI 2.0 report, Nagaland’s overall score increased from 468.6 in 2023-24 to 536.6 in 2024-25, reflecting an improvement of 68 points.

The PGI evaluates States and Union Territories across six domains: Learning Outcomes, Access, Infrastructure & Facilities, Equity, Governance Processes, and Teacher Education & Training.  A total of 70 indicators are used and there is a maximum score of 1,000.

With a score of 536.6, Nagaland was placed in the Akanshi-1 grade band (521–580 points). The State was among 15 States and UTs in this category, while only Chandigarh and Punjab reached the highest-performing category attained this year, Prachesta-1.

Domain-wise, Nagaland scored 68.1 out of 240 in Learning Outcomes, 48.6 out of 80 in Access, 77.3 out of 190 in Infrastructure & Facilities, 216.7 out of 260 in Equity, 70.4 out of 130 in Governance Processes, and 55.5 out of 100 in Teacher Education & Training.

In terms of grades across individual domains, Nagaland attained Akanshi-1 in Learning Outcomes, Prachesta-1 in Access, Prachesta-3 in Infrastructure & Facilities, Uttam-1 in Equity, and Prachesta-1 in both Governance Processes and Teacher Education & Training.

Among the six domains, Equity emerged as Nagaland’s strongest area, indicating comparatively lower disparities in educational access and outcomes across different groups.

Learning Outcomes remained the State’s weakest-performing domain, mirroring a broader national challenge highlighted in the report.

District-wise status
The district-level Performance Grading Index (PGI-D) 2024-25, however, pointed to considerable disparities within the State.

Mokokchung emerged as Nagaland’s highest-performing district with a score of 318, followed by Kohima (303) and Dimapur (299). These were the only three districts in Nagaland to attain the Prachesta-1 category.

At the other end of the spectrum, Kiphire recorded the lowest score at 227 and was the only district placed in the Prachesta-3 category. Mon, Tuensang, Zunheboto, Longleng, Wokha, Phek and Peren were all placed in the Prachesta-2 category. The findings suggest that while Nagaland has improved its overall educational performance and moved up a grade nationally, gains remain uneven across districts, with several areas continuing to lag behind the State’s leading performers.

The report further noted that no State or Union Territory reached the top four grade categories: Utkarsh, Uttam-1, Uttam-2 or Uttam-3at the overall level.
