Kohima, September 28 (MExN): President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) K. Therie has urged people to reject selling their votes in any form.
“A Government elected with such means will have no obligation or conscience to deliver the welfare of the people,” Therie stated during the NPCC District tour programme which covered Tobu, Tuensang, Kiphire, Phek and Pfütsero Towns from September 22 to 27.
Stressing on the need for the people to read and understand the Election Manifestoes of the various political parties, the NPCC President called for voting for the candidate representing such party which assure to best deliver the aspirations of the electorate.
In the local context, the candidate is the most crucial factor for the electorate, Therie viewed and argued for a change in the criteria while deciding to vote. “It is the political party which will form the Government and be accountable to the people to deliver the commitments which have won their mandate,” he insisted.
Therie accused the MLAs who joined the NPF led DAN Government of creating an opposition-less government to indulge in absolute corruption. He also slammed the present Government for being unable to maintain the infrastructure created during Congress time.
Commissions, percentages, bogus bills and bribes have become the norm today, the NPCC President viewed and added that in order to eliminate corruption, the Congress party will project “God-fearing candidates to constitute a God-fearing Government".
Urging the people not to fear money power as it will no longer be the factor, Therie said the fight will be between the BJP and secular alliance of Congress plus 16 political parties which will go to polls to remove the communal BJP from office and re-establish the democratic and secular fabric of the nation.
Therie also claimed that the movement to oust Modi has begun and exuded confidence that Rahul Gandhi will be the next Prime Minister of India.
Ruing that the present system of governance has been completely centralised with work orders issued at Kohima and payments made at Kohima and Dimapur, Therie said that given opportunity, Congress Government would decentralize governance to the lowest levels and give the responsibility to the implementing agencies.
Speaking at Tobu Town, Therie said given opportunity, Congress would provide pre-determined prices for agricultural produce to protect farmers from variable market elements and thereby benefit from the assured returns. He also assured the creation of cold storages at strategic locations for increasing shelf life of the produce and creation of value addition and marketing mechanisms.
He also highlighted other assurances contained in the NPCC Roadmap like 100 days wages to Job Card holders under MGNREGA, State road category elevation from ‘C’ Grade to ‘B’ Grade for timely repair and maintenance, Cashless Health Cards to ensure health for all, development of infrastructure and basic amenities, besides others.
Speaking at Tuensang Town, Ex-MLA and Vice President, NPCC, Shami Angh said that voters have been easily bought off in past elections and urged to change the trend and consciously vote for the party which assures clean governance, development and welfare to the people.
He also highlighted the danger of communalism and intolerance perpetrated by the BJP against Christians and other minority communities across the nation and said this is the reason for the BJP losing the favour of the people.
NPCC Gen. Secy. Jonathan Ao reiterated the corrupt practices of the NPF led BJP-DAN Government and said the mandate of the people has been betrayed with no development reaching the people. He said the state of affairs have gone from bad to worse to unbearable and called for a change from the habit of accepting gains for votes, to voting consciously.
Heeding that Political parties are bound by their Election Manifesto and are thereby accountable to the people who elected them on such assurances, he reiterated the call for more emphasis on election manifesto of the political party.
Also addressing the public meetings, Capt. G.K. Zhimomi, Gen. Secy., NPCC, said the real power lies with the people and therefore, should not sell their birthright during elections to live in ruin for 5 years.
Stating that secularism and liberal democracy are the Congress’ policies, he said the BJP propagates “One Nation, One Language and One Culture” through its New India 2022 programme, Uniform Civil Code and Hindutva forces, which pose grave dangers to Christians and other minority communities by removing special provisions enjoyed under the Constitution of India.
Others who addressed the public meetings were Shaboh Konyak Ex-MLA and Secretary, NPCC, N. Lucy, President, NPMCC and Vilhousielie Kengruse, President, NPYC.
