Issues weather alert for May 28 Dimapur, May 14 (Mexn): While rainfall in April in most part of Nagaland was “less than satisfactory,” the month of May started on a “rainy note” and the state is experiencing robust showers often accompanied with thunderstorms and lightning strikes. There was significant increase in the monthly rainfall for Nagaland – from 77mm in April to 150 mm in May so far, according to Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) monthly analysis. “In fact, the capital city of Kohima has already recorded 121mm of rain in a span of the first eight days in comparison to its monthly average rainfall of 165mm,” stated NSDMA in a notification. The NSDMA collated the pre monsoon weather data sources from the Department of Soil & Water Conservation and the NSDMA AWS Data, it said. It further informed that the pre-monsoon activities would likely pick up in coming days. Most rainfall would occur during late evening, night or early morning hours, it added. According to NSDMA, rain and thunderstorms are likely to drench the State on May 28, coinciding with normal onset of Southwest Monsoon and thus monsoon activities would "pick up its pace by May 28,” it said. In this connection, the public have been advised to “stay safe and not make temporary huts for overnight halt or stay near river banks or under big trees to reduce risk from flash floods/cloudburst and lightning strikes.”
