Sazolie College holds mini parliament

JOTSOMA, September 29 (MExN): The Department of Political Science, Sazolie College, Phezhu Jotsoma, organised the first edition of its Mini Parliament on September 28 at Vineizono Hall.

Delivering the welcome address, Edward P Sangtam, HoD (UG), stated that the main objective of organising the Mini Parliament was to foster holistic development and provide a platform for experiential learning to the students.

Highlighting its significance, he said, “India has a distinction of being named as a ‘Mother of Democracy’ and it is the Parliament which serves as a Temple of our democracy. It is a place where democratic process takes place and representatives of the people gather to discuss, debate and legislate on important issues for the well-being of the citizens.”

He added that through Mini Parliament, students can engage themselves in parliamentary-style debates, discussions and decision-making processes. According to him, the activity would help students learn not only about parliamentary procedures but also develop their leadership and communication skills, enhance civic awareness and democratic principles and cultivate a culture of tolerance and respect for diverse opinions among students.

During the first edition, students debated on issues including India’s stand on the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Manipur crisis, Vote Chori and GST reforms.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Nizhano Peseyie, BA Semester-III, with invocation by Nzanthung Kikon, Chaplain, while the vote of thanks was proposed by Imkongienla Jamir, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science.
