Dimapur, December 11 (MExN): The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, which commenced on November 25 – International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women – culminated on December 10 – Human Rights Day.
In Nagaland, the first phase of the campaign was kicked off by 181 Women Helpline, while the second and third phases were carried out by Sakhi – One Stop Centre (OSC) of Dimapur and Kohima respectively.
OSC Dimapur took the campaign to various Community Health Centres in the district from December 1 to 5. The places visited were Medziphema and Dhansiri Community Health Centres; Niuland and Chümukedima Primary Health Centre; and Duncan Health Sub-Centre. The team targeted Primary Health Centres as they are one of the most important grassroots level service providers accessible by the whole community, informed a press release from State Resource Centre for Women. The OSC generated awareness to the caregivers in the Health Centres about the issue of violence against women prevalent in the present society, it added.
From December 6 to 10, OSC Kohima carried out the third phase of the campaign. The Kohima team met with the Ferrando Domestic Workers Alliance (FDWA) and FDWA Children’s Club. The Centre Administrator of OSC, Vikhoriano Meru sensitized the domestic workers on Sakhi – One Stop Centre and 181 Women Helpline.
The OSC and Sisterhood Network also had a constructive interactive session to collaborate and promote activism against gender-based violence. The two teams sensitized each other on the objectives and services provided by them. Further, the OSC team had a consultative meeting with the Anganwadi workers, Perizie High School localities and officials and the Nepali community, the release said.
Both the OSCs sensitized on the presence, importance, and services provided by the One Stop Centres and 181 Women Helpline.
According to the press release, the OSCs successfully carried out the 2017 theme which reinforces the UNiTE campaign’s commitment to a world free of violence against women and girls to targeted groups in Nagaland. The campaign ended with the motto to “Orange the World Everyday and to live a world free of violence against women and girls; and to accentuate on the Right to Education," it added.
