Chief Electrical Inspector Electrical Inspectorate, Kohima, Nagaland • Generate as little trash as possible, as trash in the land-fills emits large quantities of Methane and, if it is incinerated, carbon dioxide is released in the process. • Do not overcook food. • Cycle or walk to the neighbourhood market. • Recycle all cans, bottles and plastic bags and buy recycled items as far as possible. • Cover while cooking or use pressure cooker to save time and energy. • Do shut off the lights when you are not using them, and turn off the TV, Computer, Video games and other electrical stuff when you leave the room. • Don’t leave the Refrigerator Door Open. Every time you open the door, upto one-third of the cold air can escape. • Hot food items should be allowed to cool down before placing them in the refrigerator. Hot food tends to decrease the temperature, thereby forcing the refrigerator to work harder to keep the air cool. • Do replace a burn-out light bulb with a new LED Bulb. • LED Bulbs use 80 percent less Energy, and they last 10 times longer. • Do remind grown-ups to use cold water in the washing machine. Hot water won’t get the clothes any cleaner, and it wastes a lot of energy. • Do close the curtains during hot summer days to block the sun. During the winter, keep the curtains open. • Instead of turning on your heaters, wear a sweater or add blanket during the cold seasons. • Replace incandescent bulbs with LED Bulbs. • Keep air conditioning to not less than 24o C which is the optimum temperature at the least cost. • Refrain from opening the refrigerator too often and for too long as this will draw extra energy for cooling. At the least, keep a container office in the freezer. • Run your washing machine or dryer with full loads. • Computers use upto 70% less electricity when you put them in sleep mode. • Devices such as TV sets, VCRs, DVD Players and Mobile chargers eat up maximum power, even on standby. Turn these off when not in use. • Don’t set your hair dryer to the maximum heat setting, not only will you save your power bills, but your scalp too. • Iron a pile of clothes at one go, instead of one or two at a time. • Illuminate your corridors using night lights when little light is enough. • Unless absolutely necessary consider using a fan to an air conditioner during the hot summer seasons. It saves energy too. SAVE ENERGY-SAVE MONEY
