The Pfütsero Government College (PGC) organized a two-day state level seminar on ‘Social Values: Self-leadership and Good Citizenship’ from January 14 to 15 at the College Auditorium.

This programme was supported by Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development (RGNIYD).

The seminar included four 4 resource persons, four technical sessions and was attended by 43 students and 35 college faculty.

The purpose of the seminar was to bring together scholars from the different parts of the country, from diverse backgrounds to discuss on social issues and share insights of spreading social awareness in the society.

Prof Vasanthi Rajendra, Centre for Training Orientation and Capacity Building, RGNIYD, Chennai in her inaugural address emphasized on the vital need for social awareness. She was joined by Prof Sibnath Deb, Director, RGNIYD, Chennai.

Technical sessions were organized around common themes to facilitate further discussions and impart different perspectives that encompass social concerns and values.

The seminar focused on social justice, civic and good citizenship, issues concerning human rights and social tolerance with special reference to North East India.     

Dr Visakhonü Hibo, Principal, Japfü Christian College, Kigwema talked on ancient practice of taboo, feast of merit, community occupation and other cultural practices in the Naga society.

She emphasized that the present day Naga society should focus and usher in values of unity, ethos, social justice and fairness as practiced by forefathers.

Tavezo Latso, Assistant Professor, Department of History, PGC spoke on an individual’s responsibility to becoming good citizens of a country which can be exemplified through practice of patience, tolerance for ambiguity and an aversion to either or solutions.

Neingulo Krome, Secretary General of Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) presented a paper on the topic ‘Issues Concerning Human Rights’.

He said that NPMHR advocates the Naga cause and emphasizes on basic human rights and freedom, issues, standards, security and violations of individual rights. He also encouraged all the participants to fight for the truth.
Mhabeni W, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology-PGC, Research Scholar, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati presented a paper on ‘Social Tolerance: With Special reference to NE India’, which emphasized the need for a mechanism for systematic and effective dissemination of information to inculcate the spirit of tolerance in the existing socio-cultural diversity.

Earlier, PGC Principal Dr Bweyhunle Khing and Vice Principal Medozu Mero also addressed the inaugural function.
Prof Sibnath Deb, Director, RGNIYD delivered valedictory speech while vote of thanks was proposed by programme co-ordinator Sutoli Sema. Chukhapa and Nuveta Khusoh chaired the inaugural and valedictory function respectively.
