Student, tribe bodies warn govt over RMSA issue

Dimapur, September 15 (MExN): The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM), Khulazu Basa Students’ Union and Chang Khulei Setshang (Chang Tribal Council) have separately called on the Government of Nagaland to immediately implement court orders and resolve the RMSA 2016 teachers’ issue, warning that continued inaction is harming students.

In a letter to the Principal Director of School Education, AKM gave five days from receipt of the letter to “fully implement the demands previously submitted to your office” and said the delay “is negatively impacting the academic functioning of 133 Government high schools and 367 teachers across Nagaland.” It added that the agitation “has not only created uncertainity but has also disrupted the educational environment for students, denying us our right to a stable and quality education.”

The Khulazu Basa Students’ Union said classes had been paralysed for nearly a month, leaving Classes 9 and 10 “struggling with unfinished syllabus.” While expressing sympathy with the teachers, it stated, “We cannot accept the silence and inaction of the Government of Nagaland, which has allowed this crisis to drag on at the cost of students' welfare.” It warned that if the matter is not resolved, the Union will be “left with no choice but to resort to stronger democratic measures of protest.”

The Chang Khulei Setshang issued a solidarity note recalling that RMSA 2016 teachers “win over the Government of Nagaland with order vide WA09/2020” and that the Supreme Court “upheld the previous verdict of the Hon’ble High Court vide order NO 19524/2022.” It said “equal pay for equal work should be maintained” and described the government’s stance as “pure deprivation.” It urged the Government “to look into the matter immediately” and said it stands with the aggrieved teachers and wishes “peaceful manner of agitation and may the demands be met at the earliest.”
