Successful story of Hunphun IGNOU Center

HUNPHUN | February 21 : Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU) is a success story in Hunphun.
Hunphun is seemingly looking one of the most important centres of learning. It is a unique university offering varied courses to every age group on dozens of subjects - all this at a low cost and a leisurely time frame.  Distance education has now offered a new way of acquiring knowledge and sharpen existing knowledge. This can be done at home with less monetary involvement. The certificates and degrees offered are at par with the best universities in India. There are hundreds of IGNOU centres in India with quite a few outside the borders of India too.
However, the people in Hunphun, students as well as the common man, seemingly do not realize the importance of IGNOU and its Study Center in their town.
People in general think that quality education can only be acquired if one studied outside Hunphun or outside the borders of their state.
Some snippets of the IGNOU suggest that since its establishment in 2000, there has been a sea change in peoples perception as society is beginning to realize the importance of distance education.
Since 2000, the centre has offered in Masters courses in Political Science, Sociology, Public Administration (PA), Sociology, Rural Development, English streams while in Bachelors the streams offered  are Political Science, Sociology, English, Rural Development. Besides, other course include B. Com, Tourism Studies and the Diploma Courses including Post Graduate Diploma in RD, Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication and Diploma in HIV and Family Education.
There are many more courses, both short term and long term, informed Mr. T. Soshim, a staff of the Hunphun told this correspondent.
He further disclosed that the IGNOU Study Centre, Hunphun has at least 70 students in every enrollment register every year. The academic sessions are July and January and so far 20 Masters, 45 Graduate and some 20 in Diploma Certificate Courses had successfully completed. There is a training course of Bachelor Preparatory (BPP) with the sponsorship from IGNOU Regional Centre Imphal to select teachers from Education Department of Manipur and Autonomous District Council. This is a course that has evinced much interest. Trainings are also conducted with  resource persons such as K. Louis (SSA), under Hunphun ZEO and IGNOU Hunphun, Councilors MS. Ringluiwon and Mr. Ngathingchan.
Soshim further stated that the current basic need of the Center is an internet connection, without which the center as well as the students would be at a drawback and disadvantage. Much of the courses are regulated online and hence a reliable internet is a basic requirement.
These tasks include receiving or sending information, communications during admissions, results, assignment down-loads for all-streams etc. Courses like BCA/MCA, B.Ed and BSW/MSW are right now available in the centre despite these being much sought after in Hunphun.
