Landslides in over 50 locations in Lumding–Badarpur Hill Section completely disrupt connection to Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and South Assam since May 14.

Guwahati, May 17 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is targeting speedy restoration work of the entire Lumding–Badarpur hill section where landslides in several locations have disrupted rail communication, an official release informed.

The NFR authorities are in touch with different organisations in this regard, stated the release from the NFR Chief Public Relations Officer, Sabyasachi De.

As per the release, there were massive landslides in more than 50 locations spreading all over the Lumding–Badarpur hill section, completely disrupting rail communication of the hilly states like Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and South Assam with rest of the country since May 14.

Nearly 2400 stranded railway passengers were rescued under challenging circumstances from New Haflong as well as Ditokcherra and cooperation from District authorities, NGOs, Assam Rifles and Indian Air Force have helped tremendously in this demanding and challenging situation, it said.

With the evacuation process being over, the NFR is targeting speedy restoration work in the entire section, it added.

However, the NFR informed that the continuous inclement weather coupled with the difficult terrain is affecting the restoration work and informed that actual assessment of damage can be ascertained only after the water level recedes.

The restoration work would need huge quantity of materials, workforce and machines, the NFR said, adding that movement of heavy machineries and materials is very difficult due to frequent breaches in portions connecting road with railway lines owing to the landslides.

However, the NFR is trying to speed up the restoration work by arranging materials from various sources including far-flung areas, the release said.

Once the weather becomes conducive the restoration work is expected to gain momentum and restoration works in nearly 12 locations have already been completed, it added.
