Dimapur, September 29 (MExN): The Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) today stated that while it “upholds and supports the right to protest as an inalienable democratic right,” it is constrained to question the “wisdom of the recent call made by certain organizations for a total shutdown of all business establishments in Dimapur on September 30.”
“The ostensible reason given for this is to voice their opposition to the shifting of the Deputy Commissioner's office to Chümoukedima,” stated the TUD in a press release from its President Vekhosayi Nyekha and General Secretary, Thepfungunyu Solo.
“Without expressing an opinion on the matter, the TUD, in the public interest, is however duty bound to ask these organizations whether they have forgotten the recent consecutive COVID-19 lockdowns and its devastating effects on the economy and the public in general,” it posed.
The TUD further argued that Dimapur and its denizens are struggling to rebuild their lives following these recent traumatic and unprecedented events.
“As such, to impose yet another compulsory "lockdown" of the entire town appears to be nothing but a display of insensitivity at its highest,” it said.
“These organizations claim to speak for the public. (But) Their actions completely belie and negate such claims,” it added.
In this connection, the TUD stated that as organizations’ grievances lie against the State Government, there is no requirement to bring grief to the long suffering public.
The union, thus, requested the organizations, “as hopefully mature and prudent entities,” to seriously reconsider their proposed actions for the sake of the public at large.
