TUD seeks release of six hostages in Manipur

DIMAPUR, JUNE 4 (MExN): The Tenyimi Union Dimapur (TUD) has urged the Government of Manipur and the Government of India to take immediate steps to secure the safe release of six individuals who were reportedly taken hostage on May 13.

In a press release, the union expressed concern that failure to address the issue promptly and effectively could lead to increased public unrest and further strain relations between the Naga and Kuki communities. It stressed the need for all stakeholders to exercise restraint and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue and lawful means.

The TUD and its frontal organisations also conveyed solidarity with Naga communities in Manipur, stating that they shared in the grief and hardship caused by the ongoing situation.

“The Tenyimi Union and its frontal organizations express deep sorrow and extend wholehearted solidarity to the Naga brothers and sisters in Manipur during this difficult period marked by loss of lives, displacement, and suffering,” the release stated.

The union said it stood firmly with the affected families and communities and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting their rights, security and welfare.

Condemning the reported abduction of six Naga individuals, the union demanded their immediate and unconditional release. It further called on the authorities concerned to take all necessary measures to ensure their safe return at the earliest.

It further noted that many Kuki settlements are located within areas traditionally inhabited by the Tenyimi people and reiterated the union’s commitment to safeguarding the rights, interests and security of the Tenyimi community.

It cautioned against actions that could result in encroachment, violence or harm against any community, warning that such developments could aggravate tensions and undermine peace and stability in the region.

The union also resolved that “any further escalation, encroachment, or unlawful activities within the ancestral lands of the Tenyimi people by any group or individuals will not be tolerated.”

Calling on all concerned to respect the historical, traditional and customary rights of the indigenous Naga people, the union urged restraint and adherence to lawful processes to preserve communal harmony.

The TUD further appealed to the authorities to act decisively, impartially and in accordance with the law to ensure the safety of all concerned and maintain peace among communities.
