Tuensang DPDB: Cyber fraud losses exceed Rs 11.33 crore since 2022

The monthly meeting of the Tuensang District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) was held at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, under the chairpersonship of Deputy Commissioner Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa on June 8.

In her welcome address, the DC emphasised the critical need for waste segregation and urged all departments to adopt the practice in their respective offices. She also called for widespread public awareness to promote a sustainable environment.

ADC Tuensang H Berimong informed the members that under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026, household waste is to be categorised into Wet Waste, Dry Waste, Sanitary Waste and Special Care Waste, with segregation to be done at the household level before reaching collection points.

In a concerning revelation, the Office of the Superintendent of Police, Tuensang, presented data showing that cyber-related financial frauds have led to losses exceeding Rs 11.33 crore (Rs 11,33,96,403) in the district since 2022.

SDPO, DEF Tuensang, Dr Akash Sinha, IPS, delivered a detailed presentation on cyber safety, highlighting the rise of financial frauds including Ponzi schemes, online exchanges, lottery scams, cryptocurrency fraud, hacking, and digital arrest as well as social media crimes such as cyber bullying, impersonation, sexual harassment, fake news, and cyber grooming.

The SP’s office stressed the urgent need for widespread cyber awareness campaigns targeting all age groups to prevent online fraud and enhance digital safety.

Er Chingting from the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) highlighted departmental activities through a PowerPoint presentation on the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission in the district.

The Jal Jeevan Mission, launched by the Government of India in August 2019 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water to every rural household through Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs). Popularly known as “Har Ghar Jal,” the programme is expected to continue until 2028.

The department also briefed the board on the Swachh Bharat Mission’s progress in making rural areas open-defecation-free through improved sanitation, toilet construction, waste management and public awareness campaigns.

The meeting concluded with deliberations on public welfare and district development issues. Saku Chingmak (SDO-C), Alem Yanger (DAO), and Lipichem (DPO Land Resource, Tuensang) were introduced to the board.
