The United Naga Council (UNC), in relation to the tension between the Assam Rifles and the NSCN-IM in Kamjong district of Manipur, has appealed to Union Home Minister, Amit Shah for intervention.
On Friday, the UNC issued a petition to the Union Home Minister (Ministry of Home Affairs) alleging the security forces of creating the situation at Kashung village and its surrounding villages of Kasom sub division under “Ukhrul district” of Manipur.
Kamjong district was carved out of Ukhrul district few years ago against the wish of the UNC. So till date, the Naga body refuses to recognize the district. Hence, it mentioned in its petition to the Union Home minister as Ukhrul district instead of Kamjong district.
According to the UNC, when there is a global lockdown including Manipur to save human lives from the dreaded COVID-19, the 24 Assam Rifles, “under such condition”, arrived at Kashung village under Kasom sub division in “Ukhrul district”, Manipur, and created a “war-like situation to flush out NSCN-IM cadres on April 21. UNC further alleged that, “after a stand-off on April 23, the Government of Manipur has deployed hundreds of state security forces for the same objective which thousands of Nagas including women folks will not give in”.
“Nagas are quite aware that the hard earned Indo-Naga Ceasefire which came into effect on August 1, 1997 was to settle the Indo-Naga political issue to a logical conclusion after realizing that military solution is not possible,” UNC stated while adding that the “historic Indo-Naga Framework Agreement inked between the Government of India and the NSCN-IM on August 3, 2015 in New Delhi under the leadership of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India is in the final shape to bring durable peace in the region”.
"Therefore, for strengthening of mutual trust and confidence and also to maintain peace and tranquillity in the region, the UNC prays you for your kind and timely personal intervention to defuse the war-like situation,” the petition letter signed by its general secretary S Milan to the Union Home minister stated.
The UNC made the appeal to Union Home minister “for immediate intervention.”
