How does one properly use social media? Is the use of public wifis safe? What does one do if s/he becomes a victim of cyber crime?
These were some of the questions addressed by Dy. SP Michael Yhome, Officer-in-Charge of Cyber Cell, Nagaland Police, during a ‘Cyber Safety Awareness’ programme at Charis High Academy, Chumukedima on Wednesday.
The awareness talk was joined by 6 neighbouring schools – Patkai HSS, Mt. Mary HSS, North Town HSS, Brighter Academy, Godwin HSS, and St Joseph HSS.
Yhome sought to highlight the importance of information technology and at the same time cautioned the young minds of the cons of IT – particularly Cyber Crime and addiction to gaming and social media.
Citing incidents of cyber fraud (like identity theft) and cyber bullying, Yhome advised against giving out personal information and to be cautious if approached by unknown persons. He also cautioned against forwarding/spreading documents or media files which are defamatory in nature.
Further, Yhome warned against making financial transactions while using public wifis and advised properly securing mobile devices or computers with strong passwords so that they do not become victim to hacking.
