USSC acknowledges assistance in Kaziranga incident: Urges restraint on social media

Kiphire, September 23 (MExN): The United Sangtam Students’ Conference (USSC) has extended its gratitude to authorities, student bodies, and citizens for their support and intervention following the incident involving a student from Nagaland at The Assam Kaziranga University on September 20.

In a statement, the USSC acknowledged the role of Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Tourism and Higher Education, Nagaland, and Benjamin Yepthomi, State BJP President, Nagaland, for their leadership and support.

The Conference also conveyed appreciation to the Director General of Police Nagaland; Deputy Commissioners of Kiphire and Mokokchung; Superintendents of Police from Kiphire, Mokokchung and Jorhat; SDPO Mangkolemba; and administrators from Tuli.

The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation, the Naga Students’ Federation, the Naga Students’ Union Jorhat, the All Assam Students’ Union, the Vice Chancellor of The Assam Kaziranga University, and other individuals were also lauded for bringing the situation under control.

The USSC particularly noted the Government of Nagaland’s “extensive and crucial support,” citing the provision of buses and security escorts that ensured the safety of students and contributed to the peaceful resolution of the situation.

At the same time, the USSC voiced concern over the recording and circulation of a video of the incident on social media. It stated that such acts worsened the situation and compromised the privacy and dignity of those involved.

The Conference appealed to citizens to exercise restraint and refrain from similar actions in the future.

Reiterating its commitment to discipline and responsibility, the USSC said it has taken serious note of the incident and will introduce stricter internal guidelines and awareness programmes to prevent any recurrence.

The statement concluded with an appeal for peace, unity, and harmony, while noting that the collective efforts during the incident had strengthened the bonds of brotherhood and mutual respect.

Student issues public apology
Meanwhile, the student, a BTech Civil Engineering candidate, issued a public apology following remarks he made regarding the late singer Zubeen Garg, which had drawn widespread criticism.

In his apology, the student tendered “unconditional and heartfelt” regret to the people of Assam, the Naga student community, parents, and the university for what he described as an “immature, insensitive and provocative” statement.

He expressed remorse that his words had caused pain and distress to students and families, and assured that such an act of insensitivity would not be repeated.

Paying tribute to Zubeen Garg, whom he described as “a beloved son of Assam and a true national icon,” the student said the singer’s legacy deserved only reverence and honour.

He further appealed to the people of Assam for forgiveness, taking full responsibility for the consequences of his remarks.
