Vehicle registrations in Nagaland in first three-month of 2022 saw a marginal decline when compared with last figure from four previous years, according to data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

As per the VAHAN Dashboard, a total of 6335 vehicles were registered in Nagaland from January to March, as against 6703 during the corresponding period in 2021, indicating a marginal of around 5.49%.

The registrations for 2020, 2019 and 2018 were respectively 7490, 8620 and 9031 during the first three-month of the year.

VAHAN Dashboard is an online data repository of all vehicles registration and other related issues in the country developed the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and maintained by the MoRTH.

It is to be seen whether the declining trend is due to continued impact of the COVID-19 or general economic factors.

For instance, as per the year-wise data, at 33,864, vehicle registrations during the last 5 years were highest in 2018, which fell by 13.94% in 2019 to 29,142.

The onset of COVID-19 and the lockdown and curtailment of economic activities in early part of 2020 saw a drastic 44.42% fall from the previous year with registration declining from 29,142 to 16,197.

However, as the restriction eased and economic activities began to resume, it increased by over 35% growth in 2021 to 21,879.

Accordingly, with the economy resuming to almost pre-pandemic level and the same momentum continues throughout 2022, a fall in registration this year could be attributed to general economic slowdown, seen in 2019.

The same trend in perceptible in the all-India data, with vehicle registration falling from 2.27 crore in 2018 to 2.15 crore in 2019, before diving to 1.64 crore in 2020 and recovering slightly by 2.62% in 2021.

Overall, a total of 28.62 crore vehicles were registered in India, including 3.83 lakh in Nagaland as of April 16, 2021 according to the VAHAN Dashboard.

No takers for vehicles in Nagaland

Meanwhile, the transition to electric vehicles seems be long way off for Nagaland with no registration so far in 2022.

It was affirmed by data given by the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries in the Lok Sabha in a written reply on March 22, 2022 which put the total electric vehicles in Nagaland at 54.  It included 44 two-wheeler, 4-four-wheeler, 3 good vehicles and 3 others.

Figure provided by the MoRTH in the Rajya Sabha on the ‘Status of Sale of Electric Vehicles” on March 16 further highlighted that during the last three years, registration of elective vehicles in Nagaland was highest in 2019 at 29, which decreased to 11 in 2020.
