Grassroot institutions like Self Help Groups (SHGs) and Village Level Organizations (VLOs) for women in rural areas has made vital contribution in homes and communities to support one another, improve economies and initiate social change.
With the novel coronavirus-induced lockdown’s immediate effect on day-to-day lives, a classic gesture of kindness is seen in free giving.

A national best VLO under Jakhama village, Vimeyie VLO on Monday took to distribute vegetables to Kohima town dwellers, winning hearts of many. The fresh vegetables fully loaded in a Tata mobile truck, had more than 20 varieties of farm and wild green leaves that were distributed to seven colonies and the Old Age Home in Meriema. Random passersby at BOC area and PR Hill junction also received the vegetables.

Speaking to The Morung Express, Mhashezole Khatso, a member of the VLO said the move was initiated to share and celebrate the abundance of nature and vegetation in the land with people in need.

Attributing the national award to the grace and blessing of God, “The lockdown has also made many lives difficult. We have heard some people selling organic vegetables and we could do it for free,” was the conviction that pushed the VLO members to come up with such service. The vegetables were collected in the last two days and they had been assembling and cleaning the veggies until late last night. In the morning they were overwhelmed to see that the Tata mobile truck was over loaded that they had to get additional transport to ferry the members and the distribution started early morning on April 27.

The member also told that the vegetables were handed over to the colony chairmen. Lerie, AG, lower Chandmari, PWD, Naga Bazaar, Tinpati, Bayavü were the colonies that were selected. The member informed that those colonies not close to main market area or away from national highway were selected.

It may be mentioned that a VLO is formed by about 5-20 Self Help Groups (SHG) coming together. As such, it was told that the Vimeyie VLO is a 31 member group with 14 SHGs under Jakhama Block.
The VLO was supported by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission and SDO, Jakhama.
