DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 26 (MExN): Several civil society organizations have strongly condemned a recent death threat issued against Prof Rosemary Dzüvichü, Advisor of the Naga Mothers’ Association and senior academician, by one WJ Longkumer on social media.
The Angami Students’ Union (ASU) described the threat, which used sexually vulgar and derogatory language, as “reprehensible and has no place in a society that values respect, dignity, and the safety of its citizens.” The Union called upon authorities to take “immediate and appropriate legal action” and urged citizens to “reject the use of threats or vulgarity as a means of expression,” adding that public discourse must remain “grounded in reason, responsibility, and respect.”
The Eastern Naga Students’ Association (ENSA) said such posts “reflect extreme violence and gender-based hatred” and “undermine the values of dignity, respect, and justice.” ENSA demanded “swift and decisive action by law enforcement” and called for citizens to promote “respectful dialogue, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence.”
The Lhisemiapfü Mechü Krotho (LMK) of Kohima Village said the death threat against Dzüvichü, who has been “spearheading the cause of Naga women,” is “morally unacceptable” and urged the authorities to take “immediate and stringent action under relevant IPC and IT Act provisions.”
The Rengma Mothers’ Association expressed outrage at the “vile and violent threat,” asserting that “such cowardly intimidation has no place in a civilized society.” The Association assured Dzüvichü of its “unwavering solidarity” and called on the community to uphold “respect, safety, and justice for all.”
The Naga Women’s Union termed the threat a “grave affront not only to her life but to the ethical values and chastity of all women,” emphasizing that attempts to silence women through coercion or abuse will not be tolerated. The Union highlighted relevant legal provisions under the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 503, 506, 507, and 509, and urged the government to ensure that the culprit is “punished without delay.”
The National People’s Women Front (NPWF) also condemned the incident, stating that the threat “is not only an attack on her dignity and safety but also an affront to the principles of democracy, free speech, and women’s participation in public life.” The NPWF reaffirmed its “solidarity with Prof Dzüvichü” and called on civil society to reject “hate, intimidation, and violence in all forms.”
The Ao Lanur Telongjem Chümoukedima (ALTC) described the acts as deeply disturbing and an affront to the values of dignity, safety, and respect. Expressing unwavering solidarity with Dr Dzüvichü, a committed advocate for women’s rights and equal political participation, the ALTC said such misogynistic targeting and verbal abuse are unacceptable attempts to silence women leaders.
Reiterating its commitment to oppose all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination, the ALTC stressed that hate, intimidation, and violence have no place in Naga society.
