Some of those who voted YES had this to say:
• Yes, this is the only way forward. Unless there is legal protection for the northeasterners, our rights will always be trampled by those who have no regard for our existence. An anti-racism law is an important measure that the Indian government must take, at least as a minimum step to show their sincerity.
• This is the most logical step that the government can take at this juncture.
• Anti-racism law is not necessarily for protecting our rights, but more importantly to punish those people who are responsible for racial discrimination. We need to look at it both ways. We people from the northeast states will not get justice from the Government of India, we all know that. But at least those who are perpetuating racial discrimination should be booked and punished.
• Without an anti-racism law, we are toothless. We need an anti-racism law to protect ourselves from racial discrimination.
Some of those who voted NO had this to say:
• No, legal law will not solve the problem. racism is a social problem and it can only be solved at the societal level. this can be done through awareness, campaign, educating the mainland people about the unique history, culture, languages of north-east india. Wholehearted acceptance attitude should be developed by the mainland indians which will go a long way in limiting racism against our people unless this attitude is developed it will continue the same. The core problem is that the northeast people and the mainland indians have nothing in common, be it history, language, culture, colour of the skin, food habits, religion etc thus the truth is that they do not accept us as one of them and we also do not accept them as one of us in hearts. This is the real picture. Only a paradigm shift in societal attitude will minimise racial discrimination. Remember racism is a problem the world over.
• No, it’s the mindset of the people which needs to change. About time we the people send efficient Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha member to Parliament so that we are associated with them. Right now we are Nepalese to the mainstream Indian.
• No, a new anti-racism law will not protect the rights of the people from the North East because racial discrimination cannot be curbed by legislation. What is required is education of the people and acceptance. At this moment the people in India do not want to accept the people from the North East as their equal.
• No. Racism cannot be removed by legislation. It needs action. The government should take strong stand to deal with racism. Mass education is one way of addressing it.
• No, 1. Every Indian law has loophole 2. The law will keep for name sake 3. They are Racist and how r they going to implement this law.
• Anti-racism law alone will not protect the people, unless it is enforce strictly.
• No, until and unless the general public(majority) of mainland come to terms in acceptance of NE people as equal human beings with willing heart one cannot expect Racism to stop by force. By the way How strong is the Judicial System of India with special reference to recent racist attacks and rape cases? Till date justice is nowhere to be seen in any of the racist attacks.
• In the 15th Lok Sabha, the MPs passed only 177 out of 326 bills. This just show that they have no concern for the suffering of the people. All they do is keep shouting at each other and attacking each other with pepper spray and suspending the parliament. With this kind of attitude, it is hard to even think that the MPs will have any thought of passing an anti-racism law.
Some of those who voted OTHERS had this to say:
• With the present slow paced court functions, laws won't protect the NE people. Attitudes and local mindsets of the north Indians should be tackled. Racism is a backward mindset, an ego factory that has no place in a global world.
• I don’t see the law making any difference. It does not depend on the law alone. There are many other factors that are involved. Let us say that the government enacts an anti-racism law, do you think the police who are supposed to implement the law will be able to do it earnestly. The police themselves are responsible for discriminating on the basis of race in Delhi, so how can we trust them.
• Why we northeast call ourselves Indian? If Indian people don’t want NorthEast people to be Indian why we are so foolish? Indian people treat our northeast people worse than animals. Why we NorthEast people join and fight for our freedom. Why so foolish and call ourselves we are Indian?
