Wokha, June 12 (MExN): In response to confirmed cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Wokha district, Deputy Commissioner K Mhathung Tsanglao has declared infected and surveillance zones under the Prevention and Control of Infection and Contagious Diseases in Animal Act 2009, issuing a set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for strict compliance.
The infected zone includes Lower Mt Tiyi College Area, Wokha Block, Wokha Village and Wokha Town, covering a one-kilometre radius from the affected premises. The surveillance zone extends up to 10 kilometres from the infected premises, effectively covering nine kilometres outside the infected zone.
Citing the highly contagious nature of ASF and its severe impact on the pig population and farmers’ livelihoods, the district administration has banned the slaughter of pigs, as well as the import, export, and transport of pigs, piglets, pork and pork products from both infected and surveillance zones. The SOPs also mandate immediate reporting of unusual pig sickness or mortality, proper disposal of carcasses as per prescribed guidelines, and strict adherence to disinfection and bio-security protocols. The directives remain in force until further orders.
