On World Environment Day, organizations, community groups and institutions across Wokha district observed the global occasion with tree plantation and cleanliness drives on June 5.

A district-wide plantation drive was organized by the Renchen Women Welfare Society, in collaboration with the Wokha Town Council and the Lotha Youth Hoho. Saplings provided by the Forest Department were planted at selected locations to ensure proper care, maintenance and long-term growth.

Addressing the participants, Renchen Women Welfare Society President Liboni Humtsoe highlighted the importance of preserving nature, noting that a healthy environment contributes significantly to the well-being of society. “Environmental protection is a collective responsibility and encouraged citizens to actively participate in efforts that promote a greener and cleaner future,” she said.

Humtsoe further remarked that the prosperity of communities is closely linked to the health of the natural environment. She urged residents to nurture the newly planted saplings and take ownership of protecting the district’s green cover.

As part of the initiative, ornamental and shade trees were planted in public spaces including the area below the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Tsumang Lake, educational institutions such as Bailey Baptist College and Mount Tiyi College, government establishments, schools, and various colonies across the district.
