The launching of Swasth Nari Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan (SNSPA) was held at the Conference Hall of Dr Motsuo Memorial District Hospital (DMMDH), Wokha with Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineent Kumar (IAS), as the special guest on September 17.
Delivering his address, the Deputy Commissioner Wokha noted that while numerous schemes and programmes under different departments were already in place for the welfare of women and children, the launch of such campaigns remained necessary. He stressed that SNSPA was not the introduction of a new scheme but a “renewed focus” on women’s health and family wellbeing.
Kumar observed that despite the variety of schemes being implemented, there existed a gap between expected outcomes and the reality at the grassroots. He identified three main reasons for this: lack of awareness about existing schemes, logistical and resource-related challenges, and lack of willingness to access available services.
He also highlighted the role of societal factors, including stigma and patriarchy, in hindering women from availing healthcare services. Citing an example, he stated that many women were hesitant to disclose their pregnancies early, while in patriarchal settings, health decisions often rested with the male head of the household.
“Women are the pivot of a family. Biologically and socially, when women are healthy, children and families are healthy,” he remarked, calling for a collective effort to strengthen women’s health across their life cycle from girlhood to motherhood.
The DC further underscored the importance of early childhood care and nutrition, noting that the foundation of a child’s physical and cognitive development is determined within the first five years of life. He appealed to all departments, healthcare professionals, and civil society to ensure the campaign translated into tangible outcomes within the 15-day period and beyond.
On a separate note, he urged the hospital management to ensure that emergency night services, maternity care, and other critical health facilities remained functional and accessible.
The programme was chaired by Dr Mhonchan N. Kithan, Medical Superintendent, DMMDH Wokha. Dr Thungchanbemo Ezung, CMO Wokha, delivered the welcome address, while the keynote on SNSPA was presented by Dr. Thungchanpeni Patton, DPO (RMNCAH+N) Wokha.
