Call for immediate action against the accused

Hundreds of women from all sections of the society under the banner of Akedah Sangtam Laru Thsingmujang (AST) gathered today at the police point to protest and condemn the rape committed on the minor at Kiphire yesterday.
Addressing the gathering Lutoli, president, AST said that rape is the worst crime committed to a woman and a rapist has no place in civilized society.
On June 12, one minor girl was raped in Kiphire town by one Taliba Sangtam (25 years). According to police sources, the accused who works as a driver is a neighbour of the victim. Police informed that the culprit picked up the victim who was returning from school to drop her off at home. However, the accused allegedly took the girl to the outskirts and raped. A case had been registered in this regard at the Kiphire police station.
Expressing solidarity to the victim and the family, the AST president appealed to the people to condemn the act in the strongest possible way so that such kind of incident does not occur again in the society.
Women representative from Yimchunger, Tikhir and Sumi who also spoke at the occasion expressed the same concern while condemning the act. The representatives also touched on issues related to how such cases should be dealt. Speakers who spoke on the occasion also voiced out to fellow women folks to take care of one’s children.
Later, the gathering had a silent procession and submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner Kiphire demanding that immediate action should be initiated as per the law and not to grant any bail to the accused.
