Administrative level panel constituted to probe illegal transport of arms: DGP Nagaland

Kohima, July 26 (MExN): The Nagaland Police has constituted an administrative level committee, headed by an Inspector General of Police to investigate the involvement of a police officer and five others on the illegal transportation of arms and ammunition.

According to the AIR Kohima, speaking to media on the sideline of a programme held at Kohima on July 26, Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma further informed that besides the probe being carried out by the Dimapur Police, the administrative level committee will look into “what went wrong and whether additional improvement in the system can be made.”

As per the investigation, the ammunitions were to be delivered to Manipur and beyond this, the police cannot say anything, he was quoted as saying.

One inspector from Police Central store in Chümoukedima, four civilians and a deputy kilonser of NSCN (IM) were arrested in connection with the issue.

As per the report, the DGP further maintained that the inspector, who was in charge of the store acted on his personnel capacity, by stealing the arms and ammunitions and no angle of conspiracy had been found.

The police had monitored the situation very closely and established the money trail and all 2480 stolen ammunitions were retrieved by the police, he added.

The arrested inspector is in judicial custody, and a departmental action for misconduct is being initiated, Sharma further informed, adding that the department has proposed to the government to put him under suspension so that department enquiry will be set up and punishment is carried out accordingly.

As reported earlier, the Dimapur Police have arrested six individuals allegedly for illegal transportation of ammunition from the Arms and Ammunition branch of the Police Central store.

The first two arrests were made in 6th Mile area Chümoukedima when large quantities of ammunition were found concealed in rice bags on July 10.

Further probing of the case resulted in arrest of four others involved.
