Ban anti-Christian film, Wangyuh advocates

DIMAPUR, MAY 18 (MExN): Nagaland Lok Sabha parliamentarian W Wangyuh Konyak has sought the banning of the controversial movie, ‘The Da Vinci Code’ throughout the country and more so in his home state because the film is “offensive in nature” and makes “a false and an irreverent portrayal of Jesus Christ as a married man with Mary Magdalene and having progeny.”

Wangyuh has written to Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priyaranjan Dasmunsi and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio to prevent the screening of the movie.

In his letter to the Union Minister, the MP said the movie has spread wrong notions of Christianity and its teachings.

“Moreover, these movies belittle what is at the heart of Christian faith and cherished in Christian Life, they hurt the religious sentiments of Christian Community in the country and are therefore blasphemous, and totally unacceptable to the Christian Community,” he said.

The Da Vinci Code is bound to bring into disesteem the Christian community in the country and create misgivings about the Christians who are a minority in India, he added.

Concurrently, Wangyuh has requested the Chief Minister to convene a special session of Assembly, or by Government Notification, prohibit the screening of the movie in Nagaland.

The movie in question is based on Dan Brown’s record selling book with the same name.
