CEO Nagaland stresses on participation in electoral process

DIMAPUR, JANUARY 24 (MExN): The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) for Nagaland State today issued a statement to commemorate the 7th National Voters’ Day (NVD), where he conveyed the importance of participating in the electoral process and the need for it to be ethical.  

A press note from the Nagaland CEO, N. Moa Aier informed that in the state, the day (January 25) will be observed in the state capital, all the districts and sub-divisions under the theme ‘Empowering Young and Future Voters’.  

The state level observation will be held at Zonal Council Hall, Kohima with Pankaj Kumar, IAS, Chief Secretary to the Government of Nagaland as Chief Guest.  

Among others, the newly registered young voters shall be felicitated. Heads of Departments will also organize brief NVD functions in respective offices and, inter alia, share the NVD message of the Chief Election Commissioner of India and undertake NVD Pledges by the employees.  

National Voters’ Day is held with an objective to increase enrolment of voters, by making universal adult franchise a complete reality. The day is also utilized to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process, the CEO said.  

The Election Commission has set action plan to achieve following goals in the next two decades: (a) Increasing electoral participation through voter registration and turnout; (b) Increasing qualitative participation in terms of ethical and informed voting; and (c) Providing continuous electoral and democracy education to the people.  

The Election Department, the CEO stated, also gives special focus on all eligible citizens particularly people from marginalized groups and segments, Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Third Gender, Service Voters and Non Resident Indians (NRIs), domestic migrant laborers besides women and youth to come forward to register names in the electoral roll and exercise franchises in the next opportunities.  

The 7th NVD is celebrated to achieve the goals of the Election Commission such as all eligible citizens get enrolled; no person register in more than one place and multiple registrations are surrendered, if any; no errors and ghost-electors remain in the electoral roll; all Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the electoral roll are identified for special facilitation on day of poll; all registered electors are issued with Voter ID Cards/ EPICs; and regular updates of electoral rolls are done for accuracy.  

On this day, awards are given to winning officers and states/ union territories that excel in Best Electoral Practices both in National and State/ Union Territory levels.  

The CEO appealed to all concerned to come forward and join hands with the Election Commission of India at national, state and district levels and make the NVD a successful platform.  

“On this day we once again remind all concerned including the government machineries, leadership of political parties, NGOs and every citizen to rededicate ourselves to pursue towards the call for greater participation through qualitative participation in terms of ethical and informed voting for a stronger democracy,” the CEO urged.
