A jungle fire that occurred in the early Tuesday afternoon at the Old Minister’s Hill jungle in Kohima was contained by fire station personnel with the assistance of local residents and the Assam Rifles before spreading further.
Sedevizo Hibo, an official at the Fire station, Kohima South informed The Morung Express that the fire initially ignited when a tree being felled came into contact with a high-tension wire. It then spread the adjoining areas of the jungle.
"With the help of the colony residents and Assam Rifles stationed there, we were able to contain the fire from spreading to other areas," he said.
Hibo mentioned that the firefighters and Assam Rifles personnel reached the spot on foot and managed to contain the fire with extinguishers without needing the fire tender, although one was deployed.
He also emphasised the importance of avoiding reckless burning, particularly with the onset of the dry and windy season.
Additionally, he informed that another fire incident was reported near Modern College, Sechü Zubza, on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, in a press release, the Assam Rifles stated that its troopers rushed to the spot and successfully controlled the spread of fire to nearby residential buildings, houses, and markets using available resources.
