Mokokchung, May 10 (MExN): A one day awareness programme on conservation of local medicinal plants was organised by Mokokchung Forest Division at Khar Village on May 10.
A press release issued by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mokokchung, A. Bendang Jamir stated that the Forest officers from different ranges under the division presented on different topics.
Lima, Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), Longchem highlighted on the ‘Importance of Medicinal Plants and its Conservation’ and Imkumba ACF, Mokokchung deliberated on the subject of creating ‘Medicinal Plant Conservation and Development Area (MPCDA)’ in the area as approved by the National Medicinal Plant Board, New Delhi. The villagers were enlightened by the presentation of Imkongsunep Longchar, Ranger Longtho on the topic ‘Medicinal Plants found in Mokokchung district.’
In his keynote address, A. Bendang Jamir, DFO Mokokchung briefed the participants on the need for conservation of age old traditional medicinal plants and encouraged villagers to continue using of local medicinal plants. He further sought cooperation of the villagers to document the knowledge of medicinal plants passed down from generation to generations.
Moamongba Ranger, Changtongya, chaired the programme and L. Kumzuk Walling, pastor Khar Baptist church blessed the programme. Villagers also shared their experiences of usage of traditional medicinal plants and their effectiveness in the treatment of common ailments. Vote of thanks was delivered by Odibendang Ranger, Mangkolemba.
Some of the local practitioners enlightened the participants about the indigenous ‘Khar moli,’ a combination of six medicinal plants which is a highly effective ethno-botanical medicine used by the locals for treatment of stomach disorders.
