Dimapur, March 27 (MExN): The Department of History, Immanuel College observed World Theatre Day with the theme 'Revisiting the Roots 2.0' at the college auditorium on March 27.

Hruzia Lazeo, HoD, History in her speech highlighted the significance of having the knowledge and preserving one's own cultural roots in the presence of diverse cultures and cultural assimilation. She urged the students to value and imbibe with their cultural heritage.

The event showcased the vibrant and exuberant cultural performances in various categories viz. folk song, folk drama and folk dance. Students from the fourth semester enthralled the crowd with their energetic Sumi traditional dance called the ‘Imu na sujo sujo’, a dance which is not just a form of entertainment but a living expression of Sumi heritage and identity. It embodies the richness of their cultural traditions, values, and aspirations, serving as a powerful symbol of resilience and cultural pride for generations to come.

A folk drama was performed by the second semester students about the tale of a woman who gave birth to the Spirit, Tiger and a Man and their subsequent separation.

Sixth semester students presented an Ao folk song ‘Watsü wabong atenshiang’ which is sung during the festivals and other events by the elders especially for the younger generations. The elders bestow God's blessings and guidance upon the young ones through this song.

The event also exhibited indigenous cuisines of Naga tribes prepared by the students. 

The programme was hosted by N Chumei Konyak, Assistant Professor, Department of History and invocation was pronounced by Langnyei Imlichuba Phom, Assistant Professor, Department of History. The event concluded with vote of thanks by Imjungla Imchen, Assistant Professor, Department of History.
