Kohima: Workshop on ‘small scale vermicompost unit in rural sectors’ held

Jotsoma, March 27 (MExN): The Department of Zoology, Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma organised a workshop on the theme ‘small scale vermicompost unit in rural sectors’ at the Jotsoma Village Council Hall on March 27. 

The workshop was part of the department’s extension cum community service rendered to neighbouring villages and was aimed to educate participants about the benefits and techniques of vermicomposting, particularly in rural areas.

Dr Lilongchem Thyüg, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, commenced the workshop by highlighting ongoing research efforts to understand native earthworm species in Nagaland. Dr Thyüg also shared insights into the prospects of vermicompost business in the state, emphasizing its potential for agricultural enhancement and waste management.

Purnungsang Longkumer, SDO from the Directorate of Soil and Water Conservation, Nagaland, Kohima, served as the resource person for the workshop. Longkumer provided valuable insights into the basic techniques of managing vermicomposting units to improve productivity and quality. He stressed the role of vermicomposting in managing biodegradable waste, offering a sustainable solution to waste management challenges in both urban and rural areas.

The session was chaired by Rusokhrienuo Theunuo, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology. Dr Anungla Pongener, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Zoology, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
