Make banking services in Nagaland ‘people-centric’: DC Kohima urges

Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Kumar Ramnikant, IAS inaugurated Union Bank of India, Kohima Branch, a public sector bank, at Lerie Colony in Kohima today. 

Speaking after formally inaugurating the bank, DC Kohima called the Union Bank of India, Kohima Branch to make its services ‘people-centric’ so that people do not face problem when they come to the bank. 

Ramnikant said that banking is a basic need of the people, without its services, it was difficult to survive today. Nowadays, while cashless banking has become a popular form of banking, people in Nagaland are still reliant on physical banking, he said. Despite that, he added that most of the general populace were unaware of the nitty-gritty of banking services and were novice to process formalities surrounding its services which would not only to be opening a bank account for depositing cash or withdrawing. 

Ramnikant, in this regard said that being approachable was very important for banks successful operation in this part of the country. Therefore, the DC Kohima asked them to extend help and empower people with the right information so that the services are easy to avail. 

Given the fact that it was the first branch in the State Capital, the DC Kohima hoped that the bank will expand in the State to other branches. 

In comparison to other parts of the country, the presence of this central bank was low; he pointed out and requested the bank officials to make efforts in making their presence statewide by opening more branches, ATMs and providing financial literacy on priority. 

Delivering a short speech Regional Head, Jorhat, Bhankar Mondal informed that Union Bank of India is a public sector bank of the country. The Bank is a listed entity, and the Government of India holds 74.76 percent in Bank's total paid-up capital. In terms of operating process, it is the 3rd largest in India. The Bank, having its headquarters at Mumbai was registered on November 11, 1919 as a limited company.

With its presence pan India presence, Mondal its entry to the state capital of Nagaland was low. 

He informed that they wish to expand in the whole of the northeastern states as its presence was low in this part of India. 

Earlier, the welcome address was delivered by Branch Manager, Kohima Branch, T Thonü. He informed that the branch was the first in Kohima. The vote of thanks was delivered by Deputy Regional Head, Kaushik Konwar.
