Dimapur, August 31 (MExN): A severe malaria outbreak is gripping the Naga Hills in Myanmar, with record cases in 2024, according to a press release from NNC member Thomas.
Despite the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, people in Naga areas are going about their daily lives in their villages, but they are grappling with a severe rise in malaria cases, the release stated.
As per the release, while most Naga youths go to work in the jade mines in the Namsi Pun area of Khamti and the gold mines in the One Pla and Takti areas, many youths contracted malaria and returned home, spreading the disease to others as well.
In Wotha Village, every household is suffering from malaria, but they have no medicine due to the lack of medical supplies in the Naga Hills, it noted.
Even if they wanted to go to a hospital in towns like Lahe or Khamti, the cost of hiring a motorcycle is about four lakh kyat (Myanmar currency). Even with resources, no one is willing to go due to the Military Junta’s conscription law, it claimed.
Earlier, medicines were supplied from Mandalay and Monywa, but the "Military Junta restricted the supply, fearing it would reach anti-military groups," it added.
Noting that people are suffering and dying without medicines in the Naga Hills, Thomas appealed to well-wishers in the western part of Nagaland to help the Eastern Naga people alleviate their suffering and save lives.
