Khonoma, March 19 (MExN): The Eco Green Club of Modern College attended the two-day nature camp organized by Nagaland Pollution Control Board at Gwizan Resource Center, Khonoma on March 14 and 15. 

The aim of the camping was to sensitize students on the importance of nature conservation, promoting environmental awareness, physical and psychological development of students, etc. 

An introductory session was held in the camp’s conference hall. During the session, a presentation was made by the Programme Officer, Khriehu Rutsa on “Waste Management in Nagaland”. Rutsa explained to campers the important waste concepts such as the process of waste management which starts from collection till proper disposal, waste classification, categories of plastics, sources of wastes, etc. 

The campers also learned about different waste related laws that are under operation such as biomedical waste management rules, e-waste management rules, hazardous waste management rules, construction and demolition waste management rules, etc.

Talking about waste management in Nagaland, she mentioned about the use of paper bags in Phek Town which are being produced by unemployed youths generating income while contributing to eco-friendly economic activities. She also shared about the good environmental practices followed by villages such as Viswema where trashes are collected routinely, Zubza where the womenfolk collect plastic bottles and send them to Dimapur for recycling generating some income in the process, etc. 

Rutsa also stressed on the cost effectiveness and environmental friendliness of converting plastics into raw materials for making plastics bitumen road which practice her department successful executed by constructing the road leading to her office using plastics bitumen. 

Later, a documentary was played through which visual the students got to learn about how climate change is impacting environment, biodiversity, weather, etc. 

On day 2, the campers took a trekking through the Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary. The campers also visited the sheep farm in Poilwa, Peren.
