Naga mothers push for 33% women’s quota

Dimapur, September 19 (MExN): The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) in keeping with the aspiration of the women population across the Indian sub-continent and many like-minded and liberal thinkers in India’s democratic political society extended its fullest support to the present ruling government policy of making 33% seat reservation for women in Indian Parliament and all State Legislative Assemblies etc.

This was stated in a representation to Vice President Dr M. Hamid Ansari. The NMA representation was signed by its President Abei-u Meru and Secretary Lochumbeni Humtsoe.

Further, the NMA urged the Vice President to use his good office to expedite the peace initiatives and help in finding a peaceful and permanent political settlement at the earliest.

“As mothers, we have been facing untold human sufferings for the last more than 60 years of political conflict which needs no elaboration”, it was stated.

The NMA also explained how “fratricidal killings” amongst brothers of the armed political movement prompted the Naga Mothers to make intervention every now and then to stop all kinds of killings and violence between members of the Naga family.

“But since fratricidal killings continued unabated, NMA started forming Peace Team in 1994 from amongst the members and launched campaigns to immediately stop all kinds of killings under the slogan: SHED NO MORE BLOOD”.

The NMA also informed that ever since Ceasefire was declared in 1997 between the Government of India and the NSCN(IM) and then subsequently in 2001 with NSCN(K), it had played its fair share of peace building along with the rest of the civil society organizations to help sustain peace and to find an amicable political solution.

The NMA also informed the VP about how it was formed to basically eradicate social evils and combat social menaces such as drug and alcohol abuses in 1984.

It was also informed that it had to a large extend successfully run and managed a Drug Rehabilitation and de-addiction Centre which has now become a fully established HIV/AIDS Community Care Centre, recognized and acknowledged by the Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) and the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) as a pioneer and leading community care centre in the State of Nagaland.
