The State's power requirement is expected to reach 250 MW by 2020-21.

“With negligible generation of our own, we have to depend mostly on the central sector allocation of about 155MW and the rest from Energy Market which can be very expensive,” stated the Annual Administrative Report 2019-20 of the Power Department which was tabled in the just concluded state assembly session here.

So far, the State has been able to develop only one major project, i.e. Likimro HEP, which is of 24 MW, the report stated.

Generation of power is considered as the source and lifeline of survival of any power utility, the report stated.

With enactment of Indian Electricity Act, 2003, and liberalization to allow private power developers in the generation sector in the country, many power projects have been developed by both private as well as Government undertaking companies to meet the power requirement.

Now, with the establishment of National Grid, power can be purchased and transmitted from anywhere in the country. However, there is an urgent need to develop our own already identified power generation projects for our Energy Security and also earn the much needed resources through sale and export of power to other states in mainland India, it said.

“Though the state is endowed with numerous hydro potential sites, many are yet to be exploited due to lack of adequate funding to develop the sites. Due to this, the Department, even after completion of 50 years of existence has not been able to make much headway in the area of development of Power projects,” the report stated.

Projects which have been successfully commissioned and are in operation in Nagaland as of now include;  24 MW Likimro HEP in Kiphire district, 1 MW Lang HEP in Noklak, 1MW Tehok HEP in Mon district and 0.54 MW Duilumroi MHP in Peren district.

The total energy generated by these projects during 2019-2020 (Up to December 2019) is 65.08 MW.

The report stated that the department is also actively moving forward for installation of solar power plants under the National Solar Mission with Solar Parks and Rooftop Solar installations in the state with a target to achieve 61MW by 2022.

The department has commissioned nine small/mini/micro Hydro Electric project (HEPs) so far with a total installed capacity of 29.658 MW in line with the Government of India’s policy of capacity addition.

Out of this, 26 MW installed capacity is grid connected from three projects – Likimro Hydro Electric Project, Lang Small Hydro Project and Tehok Small Hydro Project and the remaining old projects are operated in isolation, it said.

Regarding the status of ongoing projects, the construction works for Ponglefo Small Hydro project is going on full wing and is expected for commissioning in 2020.

For Dikhu Hydro project, Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared and MoU signed with private firm (M/S MESPL). It said that land acquisition process is in progress.

For Lower Tizu Hydro Electric Project, DPR has been prepared and land acquisition is under progress. DPR for Zungki Hydro Electric project has also been completed, the report stated.
