According to the Nagaland unit of the BJP, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform introduced by the Narendra Modi-led government is a boon for the society. Akum Pongen, Member Secretary, State Committee, BJP Nagaland told a press conference in Dimapur, on October 11, that the Next-Gen GST reform, by slashing taxes, will benefit citizens across India.

Pongen said that in line with the Next-Gen GST Reform Campaign, which was launched on September 22, the state unit is also actively carrying out an awareness campaign across the state, sensitising the public about how the new GST reforms benefit common citizens, the middle class, businessmen, traders, and particularly the MSME sector.

While informing that district committees have been formed in every district of Nagaland, he said that

the BJP karyakartas (party workers) are reaching out to people at the grassroots level, spreading awareness about the positive impact of the reformed GST regime.

He informed that elected legislators, led by the Deputy Chief Minister, are personally interacting with traders, gathering their feedback on the reforms. While claiming that they have been receiving positive response, he said that the campaign will conclude on October 20, coinciding with Diwali.

Under the reformed regime, goods which fell in the 28 percent bracket has been slashed to 18 percent, items with 18 percent GST have now come under the 5% slab.

He added that through these new GST reforms, they citizens of India, especially the poor and the middle class, will benefit the most. He claimed that it will boost domestic consumption by nearly 2 lakh crore, said to be equal to 4 times the PMAY allocations, and 10 times the PLI Scheme allocations.

He termed the achievement as the result of a decade-long effort to repair the economy inherited from the UPA, where a small taxpayer base supported over 140 crore people. As opposed to the UPA regime, he said that the the Modi government has more than doubled the number of taxpayers, from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore today.

It represents a victory for cooperative federalism, achieved through the unanimous consensus of all states in the GST Council,” he said.
