Rev. Kari Longchar called for strengthening the community spirit and noble leadership to rebuild the society while speaking at an Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur (ASTD) thanksgiving programme in Dimapur on February 28.

Terming the present days as “difficult and broken times,” Rev. Kari called for joining hands to repair the damage. The advent of Christianity, according to him, can be divided into three periods. “The first was the eye opening period, the second a period of renewal, and the third a breaking down period. Today we are in the third stage. It is a broken stage not because of anyone in particular but because of you and I. Everyone is responsible for it.”

Stating that the people are giving more emphasis on personal materialistic pursuit than for the welfare of the society, he held that the number of people working for the good of the society is lessening by the day. “The bible says every person should think not about oneself but for others.”

Remembering the police firing victims – Khriesavizo and Bendangnungsang, he said that the two youth gave up their lives for others while asking, “What can we also contribute?”

Stating that change cannot happen by talk alone, he said, “I want to challenge the good Ao citizens gathered here to discard the sins we are draped in. True change will come if it starts from our kitchen’s hearth.”

He though added that there is still hope while stating that there are many, including truthful government servants, students and youths who can affect change.

Stating that the Aos have done some exemplary work, he cited the Survival Mokokchung movement, the foothill road initiative and the Ao Senden standing up against the Municipal Act on account of taxation and after 15 years, the ASTD fought for the same. These, he said, were examples of people joining hands and working together.

“The Nagas under JCC and NTAC has been victoriously taking the initiative and will fight against many other such acts which are detrimental for the welfare of the people. One battle has been won but there are still many to fight.”

To the leaders, he said, “For the battles ahead, let us not fight by human or political might but with the faith in God and guidance under his able hand.”
