Students debate on ‘Should the Church play a role in politics?’

Tetso College Inter-College Fest highlights talk on33% women reservation, ongoing crisis in Nagaland, Illegal Immigration, Nagaland and its economy, and the traditional Naga political system versus the modern political system

Dimapur, February 13 (MExN): The Department of Political Science, Tetso College, organized its annual Inter-College Fest on February 11 with a participation of 11 colleges from Dimapur and Kohima - SM College, C-Edge College, Patkai Christian College, Unity College, Mount Mary College, SD Jain College, Salesian College, Immanuel College, ICFAI University, Tetso College, and Don Bosco College, Kohima.  

The sponsors for the event were Vodafone, US Pizza, OM Books and Hetika Café. The competitions consisted of ‘DoT Talks Paper Presentation’ by students, debate and quiz.  

The debate touched on the contentious issue of- ‘Should the Church play a role in politics?’ in which the winners were both from For the Motion team - Best Debater Award went to Shenman Konyak from S.M. College, and 2nd was won by Lituna L. Jimo from Tetso College. The debate was moderated by Dominic Khango, HoD Political Science, Salesian College. The judges were: Aonuktsung Imchen, Chaplain CIHSR; Father Dr. Suresh Padmanabhan Innocent, Principal, Don Bosco College, Kohima; and Alokali, Asst. Professor, Department of Political Science, SD Jain College.  

The DoT Talks Paper Presentation was a new initiative introduced by the College to give students the opportunity to present and engage in critical thinking and intellectual discussions, and to encourage quality research as well as the importance of using correct information to take informed decisions as future leaders in our society. The papers of the DoT Talks proceedings will also be published in an e-book to be released very soon by the Department.  

The session had a very encouraging response of 30 abstract submissions in total from which 14 were selected to represent their College. The papers dealt with topics such as 33% women reservation, the ongoing crisis in Nagaland, Illegal Immigration, Nagaland and its economy, and the traditional Naga political system versus the modern political system.  

The judges for this session were Dr. Hewasa Lorin, Vice Principal, Tetso College; Dr. Samuel Wati, Professor, NIT Chumukedima. The winners of the DoT Talks Paper Presentation were: 1st - Seyiesi-U Cicilia Mere, Don Bosco College, Kohima; 2nd - Ahyulo Khing, Tetso College; 3rd - Ato Tzudir, Immanuel College.  

In the quiz competition, out of the 6 finalists, the winners were: 1st - Patkai Christian College; 2nd - ICFAI University; 3rd - Unity College. The quiz masters were: Pakinzinlui Chawang, Asst. Professor, Department of English, Tetso College; and Veduvolu Khusoh, Department of English, Tetso College.  

A press release issued by the host College informed that the fest concluded with the closing ceremony in which trophies, certificates, books and food vouchers were awarded to all of the winners by the Principal, Dr. P.S. Lorin.
