Years after promising a new sports policy, the State of Nagaland is still relying on an old version, formulated over a decade ago.

In a written response to a question in the State Assembly, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio stated that Nagaland has its own State Sports Policy and attached a copy of the 'Nagaland Sports Policy 2012' with his reply, with '2012' handwritten.

MLA Kuzholuzo Nienu had inquired about the State’s own sports policy and asked for a copy of the ‘latest Sports Policy.’
The objectives of the policy are being implemented in the State, CM Rio assured.

However, it is worth noting that when the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) first took office took office in March 2018, promoting sports was supposed to be a major focus. Apart from the sports policy “with 100 days in power,” even a Sports University was pledged in its Common Minimum Programme (CMP).

Since then, those at helms of affairs, including the Chief Minister, periodically have pledged a comprehensive sports policy, but it is yet to see the light of day. Consequently, Nagaland’s most recent sports policy is still the 'Nagaland Sports Policy 2012,' which has been in place for over a decade.
