The Wokha Village Senior Citizens marked their 19th anniversary at the Wokha Village Church today, under the theme “Well-being in the Elderly.” Dr Meribeni Odyuo, Director (Dental) from the Health & Family Welfare Department, served as the theme speaker. During the celebration, Ezamo Kikon was honoured as the oldest male resident, while Yivungi Tungoe received recognition as the oldest female.
Dr Odyuo delivered an informative address focusing on practical health tips for the elderly. She began by emphasising the importance of a balanced diet, advising seniors to minimise consumption of foods such as pork fat, butter, cheese, and biscuits. She cautioned against excessive sugar intake, which can lead to complications like heart disease and diabetes, recommending a reduction in sugary drinks, cakes, and chocolates. Dr Odyuo also stressed limiting salt consumption to help manage blood pressure.
Highlighting the significance of hydration, she encouraged seniors to drink water regularly, even if they do not feel thirsty, and suggested hydrating fruits and vegetables, such as watermelon, strawberries, zucchini, and leafy greens. Furthermore, she advocated for the inclusion of unsaturated fats, like those found in avocados and vegetable oils, in a heart-healthy diet.
Dr Odyuo also discussed the importance of maintaining a proper sleep cycle, advising seniors to avoid alcohol and tobacco, as well as large meals before bedtime. She noted that inadequate sleep can lead to health issues, emphasising that restful sleep is crucial for mental and physical well-being.
Physical activity was another key point in her speech. Dr Odyuo encouraged seniors to stay active, highlighting that regular exercise, particularly walking, can enhance sleep quality and overall health. She commended the senior citizens for their efforts to remain active, stating that movement is vital for both physical and mental health as one ages.
The theme speaker further stressed the importance of social connections for mental well-being, urging seniors to stay engaged with friends, family, and neighbours to combat feelings of loneliness.
Turning her attention to medical care, Dr. Odyuo advised the elderly to schedule regular doctor visits, at least once every six months, for early detection of health issues. She also proposed that Wokha work towards becoming a tobacco-free community by its upcoming jubilee, citing significant health benefits from the cessation of tobacco and alcohol use.
Dr Odyuo addressed oral hygiene, highlighting the challenges faced by the elderly. She stressed the importance of brushing teeth at least twice daily and properly caring for dentures. Diabetic patients were particularly encouraged to pay attention to their oral health due to their increased susceptibility to dental issues.
In closing, Dr Odyuo expressed admiration for the resilience and dedication of the village's elderly population, encouraging them to continue leading active and healthy lives.
Wokha Village Chairman Vandan Erui highlighted the immense value older generations bring to the community, likening their life experiences to an "institution of education" that provides a foundation for younger generations.
Yiben Tungoe, secretary of the organisation, delivered a report, announcing that 10 members had passed away this year while 35 new members had joined, bringing the total to 367 affiliated senior citizens, comprising 181 males and 186 females.
The event was chaired by WYEO President Nzanbemo Erui, with an invocation led by WVBC women's leader Mhonyani Humtsoe. A prayer for the elders was offered by WVBC Pastor Rev. O Thungben Murry, followed by a special prayer for younger generations delivered by Associate Pastor Dr. O James Kithan. Mhashio Erui extended the vote of thanks, and the benediction was declared by Associate Pastor Nongothung Kikon.
