Abeyance order on “Naga commission” to stand

Dimapur, August 11 (MExN): Standing by the Home department’s order of ‘abeyance’ to the controversial “Naga commission”, the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Maongwati Aier today reiterated that the government order will not be revoked. The DC stated this during interactions  with media persons at his office Wednesday, August 11.

A dateline issued by the Naga Council of Dimapur to revoke the order had expired on August 10 last. Following a meeting on August 7, the local NGO had affirmed that failure to meet its demand on or before the said date would attract an own course of action. It had cautioned to hold a “public” meeting on August 18 where necessary details for a suitable course of action for redress would be finalized.

The government is “very clear on this, we cannot allow such double taxation”, the DC maintained. “Empowering NGOs for collecting tax is not morally right”. He further surmised that today if the Dimapur NGO is allowed to continue with its collection of “commission”, in future other NGOs will be encouraged to do the same. Questioned over the August 3 incident in which the SDO of Dimapur suffered a bullet wound, the DC maintained that it was an accident. “No one is responsible in this incident”, he asserted.

Maongwati resumes work after ‘miraculous escape’
Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur Maongwati Aier was back to official duty Wednesday, August 11 after a successful heart surgery. The administrator joined work from today after a nearly two-month stay in hospital recuperating from a heart ailment.  Aier said he had to undergo a heart by-pass surgery at Escorts Hospital, Delhi on June 22 last.

The DC was attending a meeting of deputy commissioners of the state with the chief secretary  of Nagaland on June 17 when he started experiencing pain in the chest. Following which he was admitted to Zion Hospital & Research Centre  in Dimapur the same day. He was diagnosed with a heart condition (blocked artery) and shifted to Escorts Hospital in Delhi  on June 22.

He suffered a severe heart attack the day he was admitted to the Delhi hospital. He was immediately operated upon where doctors discovered his heart had four blocked arteries. The attack was so severe that his heart stopped functioning and he collapsed. “I couldn’t breathe”, he  recalls.  The surgery which lasted four hours was a success and amazingly his heart regained the strength to let him breathe. “It was a miraculous escape for me” Aier said and added that the doctors termed him a ‘walking miracle’.

He said that the attack was brought on by excessive mental stress. His cholesterol level was normal during the time, he said. Hence, the administrator advised co-workers and everyone not to subject oneself to too much stress. The DC is a regular in the gym and jogs daily and exercises, it is to be noted. “By the mercy of God today I am able to walk, work… after two months”. “It’s not the best hospitals or money that can save us, but it’s definitely God’s power,” Aier said with all humility and gratitude to the Almighty’s grace.
