HUNPHUN, MARCH 7 : Dry spells in Hunphun have hit normal life hard with acute shortages in drinking water reported as a result of the water crisis. A litre of drinking water is sold at the rate of Rs. 2 available at the wholesale rate by dealers in Hunphun town. The trade of selling and buying of drinking water in a hilly area like Hunphun has never been experienced before on such a scale. Now selling of drinking water is a reality and a new phenomenon. The dry spells contributed by various factors, including rise in day temperature has confirmed that a rapid change of climatic conditions in Hunphun. The small ponds, streams or wells are drying up as a result of which, fetching water has now become the most common chores of thousands of households.
Often, people spend an entire night waiting in queue along with dozens of people lining up around dried-up ponds and streams. Women, including many school and college students busying themselves fetching water are a common sight. Dozens of these women and girls are seen running with pots and buckets in their hands any time of the day in most parts of this picturesque township.
Students, including those coming from far flung remote villages are on the verge of starting their HSCL and HSSLC examinations. Instead of book, many of them spend significant amount of time fetching water. Even during the night, citizens young and old of this town carry lanterns, torches or candles to fetch water patiently filling larger pots with mugs or cups. There are also reports of water crisis not only in the main Hunphun town but in the rest of the neighbouring contagious villages.
