Bomb blast greets Prez

Imphal, March 11 (NNN):
Barely 10 hours after the arrival in Imphal of the First Citizen of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil on her maiden two-day Manipur visit, a powerful bomb ripped through Nongmeibung–2 km away from Raj Bhavan that hosted her stay. Ironically, the IED explosion occurred despite heavy security arrangement through the length and breath of Imphal to prevent such eventuality. No casualties have been reported from the blast site.    Kangleipak Communist Party, Lanheiba faction (KCP-MC) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the explosion. The KCP-MC (Lanheiba) faction said the bomb explosion was carried out against the President of India’s visit to Manipur.
There has been fear in the security circle for such subversive activities during the stay of the Supreme Commander of three armed forces of the country following a Statewide 40-hour general strike from midnight March 9 called by Manipur People’s United Front (MPUF). The MPUF is a group of three influential rebel groups Revolutionary People’s Front/People Liberation Army (RPF/PLA), United National Liberation Front (UNLF) and People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK). Although the visiting President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, woke up today amid tense air of bomb blast from last night, she managed to carry on with her itinerary of the day with aplomb and grace.  At the public reception, she was all praise for the cultural heterogeneity and great diversity of Manipur reflected in the tribal customs and traditions.
The President did not forget to bring in peace message in her public speech which was quite obvious given the infamous tag of Manipur being a security deficient state: “it is in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that sustained development can take place,” she said, urging the people to “maintain harmony, reject violence and join national mainstream efforts for the development and progress of the country.”
She cautioned policy makers on the need to formulate a “comprehensive way forward” to increase agricultural productivity though better cropping patterns, using high yielding seeds and scientific water management given the fact that huge percentage of the population is dependent on agriculture.
