Landslides disturb vehicular movement on NH-37 in Manipur

Medium to heavy landslides at some places have disturbed normal vehicular movement along the Imphal-Jiribam section of NH-37 on Saturday.

 


Two houses on the side of the highway were also buried by one of the landslides at T Laijang village. No human casualty was reported.

 

 

The landslides triggered by heavy rainfall disturbed normal vehicular movement along the highway, the second lifeline of people of Manipur.

 


Hundreds of vehicles including Imphal-bound loaded trucks and inter-state buses were stranded near the landslide areas, particularly near T Laijang village where heavy landslide was reported.

 


Reports said debris of the landslide at T Laijang triggered early on Saturday morning has buried at least two houses besides totally cut the highway by the debris.

 


Owing to the blocking of the road by the landslide debris, convoys of CRPF and oil tankers being escorting by them were stranded for some hours, until the highway authority swung into action and cleared the debris.

 


However, after the convoys and oil tankers heading towards Jiribam had crossed, the landslide was triggered again blocking the highway completely. 

 


Till the time of fling this reports, authority assisted by the security personnel were heavily engaging in clearing the debris. The clearing work is likely to complete by late tonight, according to police.

 


Police said that above the the heavy landslide at T Laijang, landslides were also occurred at Laijang and Kotlen on Friday night and Saturday morning. However, authority has cleared the road on Saturday around 10 am.

 


Authorities here blamed heavy and continuous rainfalls in hilly districts of Noney and Tamenglong triggered the landslides.
Even as the valley districts and some hill districts of the state received deficit monsoon rain this season, the two districts have been experiencing medium to heavy rainfalls in the last few days.
